A one-week cultural course
to discover the Dante’s trail in Casentino
There is a bond between Dante Alighieri and the Casentino valley; you can feel it in the parish churches, around the village streets and on the hills. In the works of the Sommo Poeta, Casentino appears in memories and images of his life: the landscapes of its wonderful countryside become metaphors of remote soul places.
Many literary critics, indeed, have identified the gentle hills of Casentino in many landscapes described by Dante, believing it possible that the Purgatorio’s structure has been inspired by the landform of our valley. We have got the inspiration of our course from those places that fill the Divina Commedia: from the Inferno to the Paradiso, we’ll follow the steps of a literary journey that Dante lived personally.
The course "Dante in Casentino" let you explore enchanting places full of history through Dante’s eyes, language and verses. A week in which you will live completely surrounded by Dante’s Italian language and by the story of his literary origins.
That’s why we recommend the course only to those who have a B1 – or higher - Italian linguistic level (check it at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_Languages).
THE COURSE
Our course “Dante in Casentino” is a one-week course intended for a minimum of 3 people and held in Italian.
In the morning: grammar & reading
In the morning, we’ll study Italian grammar and read some cantos from the Divina Commedia, focusing on Dante’s Italian language. All our teachers are native speakers, graduated and qualified to teach Italian as a foreign language. Their lessons always fit for the linguistic level of the group and become an essential tool for the comprehension of Dante’s cantos, providing you with an accurate lexical and grammatical analysis of his verses.
The places of Dante in Casentino
After Divina Commedia examination in the morning and a typical Tuscan lunch, it’s time to go and discover the places dear to our Sommo Poeta, following the journey drawn by the references in the Divina Commedia. Reading the verses about Casentino, during the week we will visit:
- the Poppi castle and the Campaldino plain (Purgatorio, canto V, vv. 85-129)
- Camaldoli Hermitage and Monastery (Paradiso, Canto XXII, vv. 46-51)
- La Verna Sanctuary and St. Francis’s sasso spicco (rock split) (Paradiso, Canto XI, vv. 106-108)
- Stia and the Porciano Castle (Purgatorio, canto XIV, vv. 16-54)
- the Romena castle and Fonte Branda (Inferno, canto XXX, vv. 49-90)
